Wansbeck MP Ian Lavery performed the honours at the site in Ashington’s People’s Park.

The replacement play facility was earmarked following the demolition of the former Ashington Leisure Centre and planning permission being granted for new housing there.

Ashington Town Council led the project, creating an inclusive children’s play facility that includes a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) and outside gym.

The authority committed £210,000 to the project, as well as securing external funds from the Ashington Leisure Partnership, Ashington Town Team, Northumberland County Council’s Housing Developer Fund, Scottish Power’s Windfarm Development Fund and Gleeson Homes, while local county councillors contributed through their Members’ Improvement Scheme.

Pupils from Bothal Primary School, a parent and toddler group and youngsters from YMCA Northumberland were asked what they would like to see in the park, with the ideas worked into final plans.

The play area, constructed by Kompan, includes swings, roundabouts, see-saws, climbing frames and slides, with zoned areas based on age groups and equipment that will challenge users physically and mentally.

Coun Lynne Grimshaw said: “I’m sure the new play facility will be greatly welcomed, well used, appreciated and respected.”

The Rev Michael Hedley, of the Word of Life Wesleyan Reform Church, blessed it.
