Sexual predator jailed for violating sleeping woman
A police officer who helped bring down a sexual predator has praised the bravery of a victim who was left "violated" when indecent images of her sleeping were shared online.
Gary Gray took graphic photos of his victim while she was sleeping and posted them on classifieds site, Laconto, as a fake escort service.
The victim, who had met Gray through online dating before eventually meeting in person, bravely came forward and reported the incident to police.
Detective Constable Katherine Gordon was quick to identify Gray as the suspect and watched him be sentenced at Newcastle Crown Court.
Gray, 42, from Blyth, was sentenced to eight years behind bars for the offence along with a string of other sexual offences involving children as part of a separate investigation.
Det Con Gordon has praised the brave victim and is urging other victims of similar crimes to come forward.
She said: "This man is manipulative and controlling and thought he could take advantage of a vulnerable woman while she slept.
"It was extremely distressing for the victim and she was left completely violated.
"She's been incredibly brave throughout the whole thing, being prepared to come forward and put herself through an interview.
"We managed to track down Gray and when we seized his phone and belongings, significant evidence was retrieved that he had sexually assaulted the victim.
"Thankfully he pleaded guilty and he is now behind bars where he belongs.
"I'd urge other victims who may have suffered similar crimes to report it. Do not be afraid to come forward. There's not going to be any judgements made.
"We do the best that we can with all investigations and will support people as much as we can."
Judge Robert Adams sentenced Gray to four-and-a-half years behind bars for the offences Det Cons Gordon investigated and said he was a "dangerous" offender.
He must also sign the sex offenders register and abide by a sexual harm prevention order for life.
