North Tyneside has seen a rise in the number of Indian variant cases, leading to the Government advising people not to travel in and out of the borough unless necessary.

Officials at Pharmacy2U, the UK’s largest online pharmacy, are now urging people to get vaccinated when they become eligible and also continue following the ‘Hands. Face. Space’ message.

Phil Day, Superintendent Pharmacist at Pharmacy2U, said: “The spread of the Indian variant of Covid-19 means that we must ensure we continue to exercise caution.

"This variant seems to be more transmissible which has led to a rise in cases and hospitalisations across the country – particularly in the North Tyneside area.

“However, the majority of those hospitalised with the Indian variant of the virus have not had a Covid vaccination, so whilst the vaccine does not ensure complete immunity, it remains the greatest tool we have in remaining safe and could have prevented some of these cases.

"Therefore, when you become eligible, it is essential that you are vaccinated to help protect the further spread of the variant.

“It is also essential that we maintain strict social distancing when possible, remember to use a mask at all times, sanitise and follow the latest government guidelines.

"In areas where the variant is prominent, try to avoid large crowds and if you’re meeting with friends new guidance advises against meeting indoors.

"It is also advised, when meeting with groups from separate households, to carry out a home Covid test to help protect against the spread of Covid-19.”

Earlier this month Pharmacy2U opened two new Covid-19 vaccination sites in North Tyneside – at the Village Hotel, on Cobalt Business Park, and at the Collingwood Centre in North Shields.
