Angry residents have launched a petition in a bid to stop new homes being built on an open space in Cramlington.
Northumberland County Council is looking to submit a plan to build 26 properties in Nelson Village.
But residents and local councillors have hit out at the proposals, which they say are close to a recreational area.
Now Northumberland Council is exploring the possibility of developing other council-owned land in Nelson Village.
Coun Barry Flux said: “To hear that the Nelson Village Recreation Ground is no longer a preferred site is welcome, however, as it stands this not 100 per cent confirmed and we have no certainty as to whether other sites that come forward will be suitable or not.”
