Lynemouth Power Station’s future was recently secured after the EU Commission approved funding to convert the power station into a biomass site, safeguarding 130 jobs.

The plant is currently one of the smallest remaining coal-fired power stations in the UK and has recently been sold by RWE.

Coun Liz Simpson, deputy business chair at Northumberland County Council, said: “I am delighted to hear that all parties involved have reached an agreement, which will benefit the people who have committed their livelihoods to working at the plant.

“This will also be a welcome contribution to the economy of Northumberland and the wider north east.”

Work will begin this year lasting for two years, to prepare the plant for conversion to biomass.

Local ward councillor Milburn Douglas, added: “This will give the local community a confidence boost knowing that jobs that were previously at risk are now secure.

“Plans to make the plant more sustainable will also, in the long-term, provide assurance that there will be increased opportunities for future generations.”
