POEM: Crisis at Christmas

editorial image

Food banks crowded more and more

People sleeping rough

“Have we got the biggest turkey?

Have we got enough?”

Older people fearing winter

Carers haven’t time enough

“I think we need a bigger freezer,

Where’ll we put all the stuff?”

Jobless, homeless, hopeless now

Colder, colder, close to dying

“Just one more shopping trip should do it.

I’ve nearly had enough of buying.”

Half the world and more in crisis

So many people look away

“I’ll be glad when it’s all over,

Just another Christmas Day.”

Government has no idea

Austerity has bitten deep

“Another glass of Christmas spirit,

Then I think I’ll have a sleep.”
