RUMOURS that £15m has been earmarked to rebuild Ashington Leisure Centre have been dismissed as wishful thinking.
Northumberland County Council says the claim, circulated on the social networking website Facebook, is unfounded.
As the News Post Leader went to press on Tuesday, a post on the Save Ashington Leisure Centre Facebook group written by the group’s creator was still on display, stating: “Great news. It has been confirmed by the county council that the leisure centre will not be closing and £15m has been put aside for the leisure centre to possibly build a new state-of-the-art centre.”
Council leader Jeff Reid dismissed that claim, however, saying: “There is an intention to build a new leisure centre in Ashington, as well as a strong commitment to the wider regeneration of Ashington, and work is ongoing to ensure that this will take place in the future.
“However, contrary to reports, there is no allocation for this project in the 2011-2012 budget.”
