Pop icon Lulu brings North festival to a close

Pop legend Lulu brought the Mouth of the Tyne Festival to a spectacular finale this evening.

Thousands of people cheered and sang along as the Scottish star headlined the last of four outdoor concerts at Tynemouth Priory and Castle.

The festival, organised by North Tyneside Council and supported by Kier, Tyne Met College and Port of Tyne. had an impressive line-up this year.

Earlier today, Brit and MOBO award-winner Lemar, Kieran Taylor, Nick Pride and the Pimptones and Shields thrilled the crowds.It was also a big day for local band Static Castles, a band from Burnside Business and Enterprise College in Wallsend, who won their place on the main stage after beating 10 other acts to be voted top performers at Event @ Segedunum, an outdoor music event for North Tyneside’s 11 to 19-year-olds.

Last night, Grammy award-nominated James Bay headlined the festival as rain failed to dampen spirits of the festival-goers.

Friday night was headlined by Will Young while Bryan Ferry kicked off proceedings on Thursday.

Festival visitors have also enjoyed free international street entertainment with performers from France, Spain, Australia and Canada.

Tynemouth Station hosted activities for under-fives and there has been a free jazz programme outside the Gibraltar Rock.

Tynemouth’s popular Surf Cafe has seen some special gigs from Futureheads lead singer and guitarist Barry Hyde and Gomez front man Ben Ottewell, with BBC Newcastle rounding off the weekend at the venue with an introducing night tonight.
