The Fell ‘em Doon Festive 5k will take place on Sunday, December 11 at Ashington Community Woods – the reclaimed site of the former Woodhorn and Ashington Collieries.

Ashington Hirst Running Club started out as a run/walk group for beginners in March 2014 and it was initially attended by about 15 people.

Word started to spread and very quickly the group expanded. It was affiliated as a UKA registered running club in May 2015 and it now has 85 paid members.

Wansbeck MP Ian Lavery is set to begin the race for ages 17-plus – the start time is 10.30am.

Club member Claire Davidson said: “Our long-term aim as a committee was eventually to hold our own event in Ashington.

“We thought it would be a number of years off, but due to a lot of hard work by the committee and members, we’ll achieve this aim on December 11.

“There will be prizes for first, second and third in the male and female races, age category prizes and spot prizes on the day.”

She added that the club has been working with the Friends of Ashington Community Woods group to create the course for the runners.

The race headquarters is the Scout Hut on Reiverdale Road.

To find out if there are any spaces left for the race and obtain an entry form if there are, go along to the Ashington or Newbiggin leisure centres, the Hirst Welfare facility, or email the club – [email protected]
