POSTCODE: A question of counties

editorial image

My thanks to all of those who have replied to my query as to whether I live in Northumberland or Tyne and Wear, (News Post Leader, August 9).

It seems that it’s the Royal Mail who decided the postcode/telephone area code of Whitley Bay many years ago and this has not been resolved.

Not wishing to drag this on any further, I have just one further question.

Is there such a county as Tyne and Wear?

I ask this because the sign leaving Earsdon says ‘Welcome to Northumberland’, but on the opposite side of the road it says North Tyneside, not Tyne and Wear.

Having travelled extensively for many years, I cannot recall ever seeing a sign that says one is entering Tyne and Wear.

From the south, one is entering Sunderland, South Tyneside, Gateshead.

From the west, one is entering Newcastle or North Tyneside, and from the north entering Newcastle or North Tyneside.

Perhaps there was austerity even then and the cost of signage for Tyne and Wear wasn’t available.
