A producer from Ashington will be returning to the north east this month with an award-winning show.

Phillip Rowntree, who was born and grew up in Ashington, will be bringing Avenue Q to the Sunderland Empire from Monday, July 14, to Wednesday, July 16.

Featuring the naughtiest puppets in town, brought hilariously to life by an ensemble cast of 11 performers, Avenue Q is a Tony Award-winning musical about growing up, dreaming big, and finding your purpose in life.

Phillip said: “It’s a very popular show and it appeals to a lot of ages, as it’s funny and naughty and harks back to the days of Sesame Street and the Muppets.

“It’s a near the mark musical and there’s nothing else like it.”

The former Hirst Middle School pupil who will be staying with his parents in Ashington for the show’s Sunderland run, added: “It’s great for me coming back to the north east.

“I left in 2006 when I went to study and after that I moved to london, but it will be nice to bring a show that I have produced to the north east for all my family to be able to come and watch it.”
