Programme is held up as ‘exemplary’

An exercise referral scheme operating in the county has received a national accolade.

Northumberland’s exercise on referral scheme, which works with local GP surgeries to encourage residents with health concerns to become more active, has been held up as an exemplar scheme by Public Health England.

The scheme was one of only 11 physical activity programmes identified nationally that met rigorous Nesta evaluation standards to show they were helping to combat inactivity.

The initiative, where doctors and other health professionals can refer individuals who they feel would benefit from physical activity to help them improve their medical conditions, is run by all leisure centres in the county.

Coun Scott Dickinson, chairman of the county’s health and wellbeing board, said: “This is a real accolade and fantastic news.

“Most people are aware that being active is good for your health, but knowing what activities are suitable can be very daunting if you have a medical condition such as high blood pressure or heart disease.

The Northumberland exercise on referral scheme is there to help, support and encourage people to make activity a regular part of your life
