Pub chefs nominated for top national award

A Seaton Sluice pub has been nominated for a top national award.

Blyth Valley MP Ronnie Campbell has put forward the King’s Arms for the 2017/18 Parliamentary Young Pub Chef of the Year award.

Chefs Charlie Hazlett and Joshua Hedley started at the pub as 18-year-olds. Now in their mid-20s, they will be judged by an expert panel to decide whether they go through to the final stages.

The award, sponsored by Nestlé Professional and run by the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) and All Party Parliamentary Beer Group, will be presented in February at the House of Commons.

Speaking of their nomination, they said: “We are delighted to be nominated for the award by our local MP as we and the team are passionate about what we do and work really hard to offer not only traditional pub food but also food with a twist for the more adventurous.

“Just to have this recognised by someone so well respected, locally and nationally, is the icing on the cake.”

Mr Campbell said: “I am delighted to nominate Joshua and Charlie.

“This is fantastic opportunity for the chefs to highlight their skills in this incredibly talented sector.

“In addition to traditional home cooked pub grub, they are renowned for their excellent fish and chips.

“The kind of acknowledgment this competition offers is exactly what people need to put the reputation of pub chefs’ on the map and attract more talent to the industry. I wish them every success.”

Brigid Simmonds, chief executive of the BBPA, said: “With pubs serving around a billion meals each year it is important to recognise the contribution pub chefs make to the eating out experience in this country.

“The outstanding range of culinary options that span from breakfast to evening meals demonstrates the huge wealth of creativity in pub kitchens, big and small.

“Many leading, well-known celebrity chefs have ventured into the pub arena helping to further boost the quality of food in pubs, whilst still making it an affordable treat.

“Our aim is to highlight the talented chefs around the country, help spot future stars and encourage more young people to consider training and working as a chef in a pub.”
