Pupils get lessons in lifesaving skills
Pupils have been learning how to help save lives.
Shanklea Primary School, in Cramlington, took part in St John Ambulance’s Big First Aid Lesson Live.
Taking part last Friday, they tuned into the free, interactive hour-long programme hosted by TV medic Dr Ranj.
The Big First Aid Lesson Live covered topics including choking, chest pains, seizures and insect bites, with live demonstrations, incredible real-life stories, chances for students to ask questions and other interactive elements.
Jade Martin, Shanklea Primary’s PE and extra curricular co-ordinator said: “At Shanklea Primary School we are very active and take part in endless physical activities.
“Over the past year we have had a big push on children learning skills to keep them healthy and safe.
“We recently held a fundraising week and one of our parents ran the London Marathon to raise money to help fund a defibrillator.
“On site we are the proud owners of a defibrillator, but recognise that defibrillators alone are unlikely to save lives unless people see or find someone when they collapse, call 999 and start CPR.
“We feel learning first aid is an important life skill and should be involved in every child’s education. It will empower them to be confident and competent to intervene and to possibly save a life.”
Dr Ranj said: “As a doctor, I know only too well how important first aid can be in an emergency. Being able to immediately help someone can be life saving. But you don’t have to be a medic like me to learn or use it.”
“Anyone can learn first aid at any age and that’s why I’m supporting St John Ambulance’s Big First Aid Lesson Live. I’m excited to be hosting this year, as I know the lesson will help enrich the next generation with the confidence and knowledge to save a life.
“We know schools are time-pressed but the Big First Aid Lesson Live is free, easy to join, and memorable, so we hope teachers everywhere sign their classes up and get involved.”
Simon Dunn, St John Ambulance’s Regional Director North said: “The Big First Aid Lesson Live is an accessible, easy to learn, and fun resource – students will finish the lesson feeling confident they could one day be a life saver.
“I encourage each and every school to take part so their pupils don’t miss out on this exciting and educational event.”
