Whitley Memorial CE First School in Bedlington has received an award for its tree-mendous environmental efforts.

The school is one of the few in Northumberland to have been awarded the Gold Green Tree Award from the Woodland Trust.

Lots of the children got involved in the initiative by helping to plant trees in Forest School, decorating trees on Tree Day and by recycling cards and printer cartridges.

They also enjoyed a tea party and listened to a story about trees in worship.

Each activity earned points, which helped the school move from bronze to silver, and now up to gold.

The Woodland Trust handed over a wooden plaque to hang in the school’s entrance. The project was led by nursery teacher Miss Dodd.
