Students from Ashington have gained an insight into the world of work as part of Action for Children’s national children’s commisioner’s Takeover Day.

The group of Early Years students from Northumberland College’s Ashington campus joined staff at Northumberland Children’s Centres in Ashington, Bedlington and Newbiggin to learn about various roles within Action for Children.

Gill Physick, children’s services manager at Action for Children in Northumberland, said: “I was delighted to be shadowed by Alanna, she was very enthusiastic and it is great knowing that we have inspired her and the other students at the start of their career.

“This is the first time we’ve run the Takeover Day with Northumberland College and we hope to do this every year, extending the opportunity to students on other courses.”

The day was the start of a brand new partnership between the college’s Early Years’ departments and Action for Children in Northumberland.

Early Years students from the college will be given placements at the children’s centres across the county to gain valuable work experience essential for their future careers.

Gill Physick added: “Action for Children runs 39 services across the north east, including seven in Northumberland, which provide a wide range of services including family support, nursery places, play sessions, parenting courses and breast-feeding support sessions.”
