Young business brains at a Cramlington school have proved to be among the best in the region.

Students at Cramlington Learning Village are celebrating being crowned the north eastern regional winners of the Coca-Cola Enterprises Real Business Challenge.

Schools from across the region travelled to St James’ Park to compete in the challenge, with Cramlington Learning Village being victorious with their campaign to raise awareness and support for sports charity StreetGames and its multi-sports festivals taking place over the summer.

The students will now progress to the national finals in London on March 25 where they will compete against the ten other regional finalists for a chance to win a work experience placement at one of the StreetGames festivals.

Teacher Michael Bacon said: “It was an absolutely fantastic day.

“The school has had past success in the competition, so to beat 5,000 students in the region is incredible.

“I am so proud of the students. They have worked so hard.”

The Real Business Challenge offers students aged 13 to 15 a taste of the skills needed in a business environment.

At the regional event, students were mentored by CCE professionals to help develop their business ideas before presenting them back to the judging panel, which was led by Bev Burnham, senior manager of corporate responsibility and sustainability at CCE.

Teams’ scores were based on their enterprise skills, including teamwork, leadership, creativity and presentation abilities.

Bev said: “The standard at this regional final was outstanding.

“Any business would be proud to work with the students.

“Their capacity for creativity through to implementation was breathtaking.”

Jane Ashworth, chief executive of StreetGames, said: “The opportunity for young people to develop new skills for the world of work that comes from the Real Business Challenge is something that we’re excited to be a part of.”
