Residents urged to join in with Great British Spring Clean
Northumberland County Council has organised litter-picks in four towns this week as part of the Great British Spring Clean campaign.
The events in Alnwick, Hexham, Ashington and North Seaton will all start at 10am and finish at noon this Friday.
The clean-ups will take place in Hexham - meet on Maiden's Walk near to junction with Allen Drive; Alnwick - meet outside Alnwick News shop on Upper Barresdale; Ashington - colliery rows between Milburn Road and Hawthorn Road - meet on Milburn Road close to entrance to Central First School; North Seaton - Paddock Woods North Seaton Roundabout to Woodhorn roundabout - meet at woods near to North Seaton roundabout.
Launched this year, The Great British Spring Clean is a national clean-up weekend running from March 3 to 5.
Coun Ian Swithenbank, cabinet member for local services, said: "The spring clean is a great chance for people to work together to help improve their neighbourhoods. We are urging residents to spare just a couple of hours of their time on Friday and come out and get involved."
Litter remains a huge problem across the country, causing harm to the environment and wildlife, with councils in England having to spend more than £700million on street-cleaning services every year.
There are also a number of other neighbourhood clean-ups taking place across the county and the council will be also be supporting these by providing litter pickers, hi-vis vests, gloves and rubbish bags as well as picking up the refuse afterwards. For more information, contact email@example.com
