Final restoration and landscaping work on a community park is on schedule after an agreement was reached on how it was to be carried out.

Banks Mining had previously finalised the majority of the planned restoration and landscaping work on the site of the former Pegswood surface mine.

But it had been unable to complete the project’s second phase due to an issue with the water level on the lake at the centre of the park.

But now new paths are being laid around the top end of the lake, the existing boulders along the waterline are being repositioned, and a redundant outfall near the park’s car park has been filled in.

Seed sowing and planting will follow at the appropriate seasonal times.

Mark Dowdall from The Banks Group said: “Having the agreement of the local Pegswood community on how work at the community park was to be completed was very important to the success of the project, and we’re very pleased to be completing the final touches to the restoration.

“Work is also continuing to complete the footpath link through phase two of the country park and Howburn Wood to Whorrell Bank, which includes additional fencing and habitat enhancement work, and we hope to have this footpath link as soon as possible.”
