A local MP will be a milk monitor for the day this week as he helps to mark World School Milk Day.

Blyth Valley MP Ronnie Campbell is taking on the role at the town’s St Wilfred’s Primary School.

To mark the event, St Wilfred’s will be encouraging children to drink milk and understand the nutritional benefits it provides, alongside hundreds of schools and nurseries across the country.

The initiative is driven by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations and celebrates milk in school in more than 30 countries around the world since 2000.

In the UK, an estimated 1.5 million children under the age of five receive free milk every day, while pupils aged five to 11 receive subsidised milk.

World School Milk Day is funded in the UK by Cool Milk.

Managing director John Sedgwick said: “School milk provides a great boost for children because it is such a wholesome and nutritional product.

“All children in nurseries and schools up and down the country should have access to school milk every day.”
