The senior youth worker at Silx Teen Bar in Blyth was in for a right royal surprise when she received a letter on behalf of the Duchess of Northumberland.

It said that Jackie Long has been chosen to attend the grounds of Windsor Castle during the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on Saturday, May 19.

Individuals from a range of backgrounds and ages were selected for these invitations by the regional Lord Lieutenants.

They will be able to watch the arrival of guests, hear the service live and see the departure of a carriage procession after it has concluded.

Jackie first became a youth worker in Blyth in 1995 at Ridley High School and was a major part of getting Silx off the ground.

Over the years, she has run various educational projects and activities, and helped and supported thousands of young people with a range of issues.

Jackie said: “I knew I had been nominated, but I forgot about it until I opened the letter because I didn’t think I would be chosen, so it was a fantastic surprise.

“It will be a great experience and I’m taking a friend with me, who is also very excited.

“I’m also pleased that this will help to highlight the work that Silx does for young people in the community.”

Silx is currently looking for new trustees. Call 01670 351356 for more information about the role.
