Leeds Beckett University has awarded a £1,000 scholarship to an English and media student from Newbiggin-by-the-Sea.
Alanya Wilson, 19, will use the financial support to buy textbooks and get involved in university trips to MediaCity in Manchester.
Bright Futures Scholarships offer financial support to students who might otherwise be unable to afford a university education. They are awarded to high achieving first year students who are the first in their family to go to university and are based on academic merit.
Alanya said: “There was a point in the year when I thought I’m not even going to go to (university), I can’t afford to. My parents can’t afford to send me money, and the student loan doesn’t cover my costs. The scholarship will make things a lot easier for me and take the pressure off, I’ll be able to get involved with student life a lot better.”
She has always been naturally good at English, and when she started studying Media as well during Year 12 fell in love with the subject. She’s currently working 30 hours a week at ASDA to support herself through university.
