The mother of a soldier killed in Afghanistan is searching for an artist who has sent her a painting of her son.

Former Guardsman Michael Sweeney, from Blyth, was with the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards when he was killed while on patrol in the war torn country on April 1, 2010, at the age of 19.

And this week his mum Kim received a painting of Michael in the post.

“I received a package during the week, and to my surprise pulled out a painting,” she said.

“Inside was a note from a lady who I think is called Pam Galliers.

“She went on to say she enjoys painting, and saw Michael’s picture in the paper, and decided to paint it.

“She hoped we took no offence and offered her condolences.

“The only problem is she didn’t put a return address so I could thank her.”

Kim is now hoping the artist gets back in touch with her so she can say thank you for the painting.

“The portrait was so spot on, the sadness on his face made me cry,” she added.

“It now has pride of place in our dining room amongst his other pictures and display unit.

“It would be lovely to thank her in person.”
