Wansbeck MP Ian Lavery is backing a search by the Anthony Nolan charity for more local heroes to join its bone marrow register to help save the life of those fighting blood cancer.
The charity has revealed that in Wansbeck, 462 selfless people have joined the register by saying they are willing to donate their stem cells or bone marrow to save someone’s life.
The Anthony Nolan charity was the world’s first bone marrow register, matching remarkable people willing to donate their bone marrow or stem cells to patients in desperate need of a transplant.
Two thirds of UK patients will not find a suitable match from within their own families and turn to Anthony Nolan to help find a suitable non-related donor.
However, the charity can only find a perfect match for 60 per cent of people needing a transplant, so it urgently needs more potential donors to come forward.
Potential donors must be aged between 16 and 30 and in good health.
