Silence can be a dangerous thing

YOUR correspondent John Boak, (News Post Leader, September 13) has every right to defend the reputation of his home town by reminding us of that old saying ‘If you can’t say a good word then don’t say anything at all’.

Unfortunately, silence can also be a dangerous thing, especially when the truth is crying out to be heard. Silence can sometimes be the enemy of truth.

Perhaps I can also quote another old saying that goes ‘Silence will save me from being wrong, but it will also deprive me of the possibility of being right’.

Or perhaps the lyrics of that song by The Tremeloes in 1967 – ‘Silence is Golden, but my eyes still see’.
