Residents living close to a 70mph dual carriage way are set to see the speed limit on the road drop to 50mph following a safety campaign.
Northumberland County Council is looking to change the speed limit on the A192 which pedestrians have to cross when walking from East Hartford to Northburn.
Following the raising of the issue at the Northumberland South East Area Committee by Coun Barry Flux, including the submission of a petition from local residents asking for action, the county council have proposed a speed reduction on the road.
A consultation will now officially begin on dropping the limit from the national speed limit to 50mph, from West Hartford Fire Station Roundabout to the Three Horse Shoes interchange.
Coun Barry Flux said: “I agree that the speed limit should fall on this road.
“However, I also believe that the County Council should go much further and include a traffic light crossing on the road.
“The county council agree this is a high risk site and therefore I believe action of the highest order to make this safe should take place.”
“I believe that it would be even better if the council introduced a crossing,” he added.
