A FORMER coal miner has been appointed headteacher at a south east Northumberland school.

Stephen Griffiths has been appointed the new head at Bedlingtonshire Community High School, and he will take up the post from the start of the next school term in January 2013.

Stephen has taken on the role following the departure of Kieran McGrane, who left to take up a headteacher position at Ponteland High School in the summer term, after more than five years at the Bedlington school.

A former Staffordshire coal miner, Stephen demonstrated his passion for education and vision for the school.

David Kinninment, the acting headteacher, will continue to lead the school until January.

Trevor Weldon, chairman of the governing body, praised the work of Mr McGrane and Mr Kinninment.

“We are delighted to welcome Stephen to the area and look forward to working closely with him at this exciting time in the school’s history,” he said.

“Stephen will be joining a very strong leadership team which has been led in recent months by David Kinninment, who has done an excellent job in delivering continued improvement, despite his short time in office.”

Stephen will take over the role when the school reassembles on Monday, January 7, after the Christmas break.
