Storey takes six wickets as Ashington open season with win
Pace merchant Callum Storey took a six-wicket haul and batsman Ben O'Brien scored an unbeaten half century as Ashington could not have made a better start to the new cricket campaign on Saturday.
The Colliers raced to an eight wickets success over Benwell & Walbottle at Langwell Crescent.
Despite conditions being cold, Callum Storey proved to be red hot early doors as he bowled Carr in the first over before being on a hat-trick in the ninth after trapping Smith leg before then having Frisken caught behind by wicketkeeper Daniel Grant.
When Reed fell in Ani Singh’s second over, the visitors had slumped to 26-4, but they staged a recovery through the efforts of Raza and Birrell who added 59 for the fifth wicket.
However, Singh bowled the latter for 30 and then accounted for Bell via an lbw shout.
Storey returned to hit the stumps twice, removing Haque and Robson then had Waddell caught behind.
Ben Harmison also came back into the attack and from the first ball of the 36th over bowled Raza for 58.
Storey, who claimed a six-wicket haul on the opening day of the season in 2014 at Lanchester, ended with 6-28 from 11 overs; Singh taking 3-34 from 12 and Harmison 1-19 from 8.1.
In reply, Ashington also made an uncomfortable start, losing early wickets as Ani Singh and Neil Wood were both trapped lbw.
However from being 13-2, Jack Jessop (44 not out) and Ben O’Brien (52 not out) forged an unbroken stand of 100 in 23 and a half overs to steer their side to victory.
On Saturday, Ashington are away to Tynedale.
