WORKERS and shoppers were caught out today after a heavy thunderstorm hit south east Northumberland.

Just after 4pm the skies turned black and monsoon conditions battered the region, leaving those on the streets to run for shelter.

Motorists were also caught out as roads flooded across the north east, and driving conditions became treacherous.

People looked on as the sky lit up with lightning bolts followed by rumbles of thunder.

Streets in Northburn in Cramlington were sumberged under water, and police closed Brierley Road in Blyth.

Residents took to Twitter to voice their concerns about the growing storm as it travelled across the north east – some dubbing it a ‘mega storm’.
