PLANS to bring superfast broadband to Northumberland have been welcomed by a county MP.
Berwick MP Sir Alan Beith says the approval by the European Commission to allow the government’s £530m rural broadband scheme can only be a good thing.
Work on laying cables is expected to start soon, with £7m being spent in the county to provide superfast broadband.
Sir Alan said: “Superfast broadband is crucial to build a strong economy, where everyone has the opportunity to make a success of their business.
“This will create jobs and growth for us in Northumberland and ensure we can compete fairly with the big cities.
“It is also very important for local and national government to deliver public services effectively online and to going about our everyday lives. For too long, our area has missed out on investment in broadband.”
