Thousands of smokers are being encouraged to stub out the habit for ‘Stoptober’.
And one woman from Seaton Delaval is keen to pass on her tips after she gave up smoking.
Sixty-one-year-old Heather Goddard is celebrating a smoke-free year after quitting for Stoptober last year.
Having quit alongside her husband and colleagues in the workplace, she is now encouraging others to support friends and family as part of this year’s 28-day challenge.
She said: “I visited my GP in September last year after suffering with a chesty cough.
“Within a few days I was in hospital for a chest x-ray which revealed I had shadows on my lung – symptoms of COPD.
“I had smoked for almost 40 years, but the diagnosis was such a shock, I knew I had to stop for the sake of my health.”
