Tax payer should not pay court fine

I AM disgusted Northumberland County Council has been made to pay £21,764 in fines and court costs because of a serious breach of health and safety rules (News Post Leader, July 28).

This may seem a fair punishment for an act of negligence which nearly cost a crane driver his life, but is it too much to argue that the wrong people have been punished?

How will the council find this £21,764?

By raising the council tax perhaps? Or by cutting back on vital frontline services?

Either way, ordinary people will be the losers.

Could the chief executive not meet the costs out of his salary?

Northumberland County Council employs a lot of people, some of whom are on obscene salaries.
