Companions are needed to help dementia sufferers in South-East Northumberland.

The Alzheimer’s Society’s Ashington team is seeking volunteers able to offer a couple of hours a week to provide company for people with dementia.

Its Northumberland befriending service, launched last October, has proved more popular than anticipated.

“This means we desperately need more volunteers to help out and become befrienders,” said volunteering officer Suzanne Johnstone.

‘They will be able to offer people with dementia opportunities to pursue interests in the community or to have a chat and a cup of tea at home.”

To oblige, call Suzanne on 01670 813255 or email her at volsnorthumberland@

Suzanne added: “Before they start on this important role, all our volunteers receive training and ongoing support.

“We are looking for people who can commit to a couple of hours per week on a regular, ongoing basis who are patient and understanding and who want to help people with dementia to live well.”
