Cars collide on icy roads causing two hour closure

COMMUTERS faced major rush-hour delays on Tuesday morning after icy road conditions caused a two-car crash, closing a major route in the county.

Just after 7am police were informed of a collision on the A189 near the Bebside roundabout involving a Vauxhall Vectra and a Toyota Yaris.

Police, ambulance and fire services were called to the scene and a section of the road was closed off.

A Vauxhall Corsa was also involved in a separate collision nearby, which was also dealt with by emergency services.

The road remained closed for around two hours.

Police were advising motorists to take extra care on icy roads after a number of reports were received of vehicles skidding due to the road conditions, especially across south east Northumberland.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “We have had a number of reports of black ice causing cars to skid and to come off the road.

“Motorists are advised that all roads are potentially hazardous in these sorts of conditions and they should be aware of black ice.”
