Trophy success at double for cadets

A prestigious award has been presented to Ashington Sea Cadets.

The Stephenson Trophy covers the North East of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland – there are 79 units in this area.

The gathered points come from inspections, boating qualifications, promotions, community activities, competitions, hours on the water, presentation of uniforms and other activities.

In addition, Alfie Simpson presented Pauline Finlay, Officer in Charge at the Ashington unit, with the District Cup.

This is awarded to the top unit in the Northumberland district and Ashington has now won it three years in a row. It is based on scores achieved from the annual inspection.

Wansbeck MP Ian Lavery and local councillors Lynne Grimshaw, Avril Chisholm and civic head of Ashington Victor Bridges were present at the award presentations.

Unit chairperson Michelle Tait said: “I am very proud of the achievements that the cadets, staff and committee have all done for the unit.”
