Northumberland residents are being urged to use NHS services appropriately as the number of people accessing urgent and emergency care services continues to rise.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is highlighting the high number of inappropriate attendances, especially at the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital near Cramlington.

Bosses say this is putting extra pressure on frontline teams who are there to care for serious and life-threatening emergencies and the high number of patients, particularly the frail elderly, who require hospital admission.

People should not attend the new hospital for sore throats, small cuts or on-going medical problems that are best looked after by their GP.
