Dozens of local residents took to the streets of Bedlington this week to restore planters and hanging baskets damaged by vandals.

Volunteers including young people, community groups, local councillors, residents and the Police responded to a call to restore the area outside St Cuthbert’s Catholic Church.

Brenda Dalton, secretary for Bedlington in Bloom, said: “We appreciate the help of the local community greatly and we really feel supported.

“We have put a lot of work into this – from nurturing the plants up to planting stage – and we are quite humbled by the response that we have had today.

“It is very important that all of the various community groups work together as a team because we all have the same vision for Bedlington – we are a very proud community.”

Among those present at the replanting were a number of Youth Ambassadors, who are a group of dedicated young volunteers from local charity Leading Link.

Leading Link sent out a plea for support for the Bedlington in Bloom venture, to young people and their families.

The judging of the Bedlington in Bloom group is set to take place later in the summer.
