Vote on name for Bedlington's newest development
A competition has been launched to name Bedlington's latest development.
Young members of the Bedlington Delivery Group have come up with a host of potential names for the new £10million development at the former Tesco store – which will create 180 jobs, 33 construction jobs and inject £1million into the local economy.
Development company Arch is pushing on with the project after 98 per cent of residents backed the plans at a recent consultation event – submitting an outline planning application.
A competition is now being held to name the project, with people able to vote for their favourite from The Cross, The Market Point, The Forge and Pipers Place.
Youngsters have designed a mascot for the competition, called Bedlington Ben, and have designed stickers, leaflets and shared ballot boxes across the town to encourage more people to get involved in the ballot and choose the name for the centre.
People can vote online at the www.investinginbedlington.co.uk The competition runs until March 3.
A spokesman for the Bedlington Delivery Group said: “This is a unique opportunity to involve local people in the naming the new centre and we believe that it’s the first time that local people will get a chance to name a local commercial development.
“People don’t usually get a chance to name shopping centres so it’s great that young people have been at the forefront of the design and the vote.”
“We’re keen to involve young people in future decisions and we want them and the rest of Bedlington to feel a stake in the new centre.”
