Work to begin on protection against floods

A five-month programme of work to help protect homes in Whitley Bay from flooding is to begin next month.

From Monday, September 1, Northumbrian Water will begin a £400,000 scheme to reduce the risk of flooding to properties in Links Avenue and The Links.

The work will involve upsizing 500m of existing sewers and installing new sewer pipes in the area.

Graeme Ridley, Northumbrian Water’s project manager for the scheme, said: “Reducing the risk of flooding to customers’ homes and businesses is one of our top priorities as we appreciate the distress and inconvenience it can cause.

“With weather patterns changing we are seeing an increase in flash flooding and we need to be prepared for the future.

“This work is one of dozens of improvement schemes we will be carrying out over the next couple of years, to upgrade our vast sewer network and help to reduce the risk of properties flooding.”

A rolling road closure will be in place along Links Avenue from September 29 to January 16, and a single lane road closure will also be required for short intervals on The Links from September 29 to October 20.
