Work to build new homes on the site of a former school is set to begin.
Arch Homes is leading the project to build 18 two-bedroom apartments for the over-55s on the former Bedlington Old School site.
The development will create up to 45 construction jobs and bring £100,000 of extra local spend into the heart of Bedlington each year.
The new apartments will also generate £34,000 additional income each year for council services through the council tax and New Homes Bonus.
Coun Alyson Wallace said: “When seeking election in 2013, I made it a pledge to the community that this derelict site, which had been at one time a wonderful school, would be developed with the full knowledge it was within a conservation area.
“I am pleased to say that the conservation officer is recommending approval and that Arch is to develop 100 per cent affordable housing to rent within Bedlington.
“I am sure that when completed, many over 55s will rush to take residency in easy reach of a new retail offer in the town centre.
“This can only be good, positive news for Bedlington.”
Each of the apartments will include fitted kitchens and an allocated parking bay for each property.
“The apartments will be decorated, complete with carpeting and flooring throughout.
This new development will enhance the central area in Bedlington, contributing to the new proposals on the former Tesco site.

The Bedlington Old School site is elevated above Bedlington Front Street on Church Lane. The school closed in 1974 and later became St Cuthbert’s Church Hall which fell into disuse in the late 1990’s. The work is scheduled to commence early 2017.
