The big Sedgefield pack started strongly but Ash fought back well and good hands from Jarvis, Whitworth and Weeks set up an attacking maul that was held up two metres short of the try line.

Sedgefield took the lead on 15 minutes with a try from a charged down clearance kick.

Ashington bounced straight back as Turner, Weeks and Moffatt combined well and as the ball was spun wide, skipper Newman took the ball at pace to crash over for a try, converted by Elliot.

Sedgefield kicked two penalties to give them an 11-7 lead before Josh Weeks scored in the corner for Ashington after good work from Lewis Henderson.

But their lead was short lived with Sedgefield scoring in the opposite corner on the stroke of half-time to give the home side a 16-12 lead.

The second half was full of wrong choices and missed opportunities for Ashington with Sedgefield extending their lead with a penalty and converted try.

The features from Ashington were a storming touchline run from prop Sean Beattie to set up an attacking lineout which Sedgefield won and were able to clear their lines, and runs from Jarvis, Whitworth and Turner all setting up attacking positions which Ashington failed to convert into points.

This week there is no Ashington first XV game.
