HE’S got some tough acts to follow by visiting the home town of three X Factor winners.
But fellow champion of the ITV1 talent show, Matt Cardle, is today exclusively revealed as the headline star of this year’s South Tyneside Summer Festival.
The 29-year-old, who shot to fame after winning the seventh series of The X Factor in 2010, will be performing in Bents Park, South Shields, on July 22.
And he’ll be hoping fans of Little Mix – the band which features South Shields bandmates Jade Thirlwall and Perrie Edwards – and Westoe pop star Joe McElderry, will come out and support him for his gig in the borough.
Cardle’s debut single, When We Collide, sold more than a million copies, and his first album, Letters, spent 14 weeks in the top 40 after it was released last October.
And he’s just finished a 23-date tour of UK and Ireland, which concluded at the Hammersmith Apollo in London, last month.
Coun Iain Malcolm, leader of South Tyneside Council, said: “South Tyneside Summer Festival continues to be one of the biggest and best free festivals in the country.
“And I’m delighted we have been able to secure such a fantastic performer, who I’m sure will wow the crowds and enjoy a great welcome.
“The festival continues to go from strength to strength and once again we’ve pulled out all the stops to ensure that there’s plenty of entertainment for people of all ages to enjoy – and of course it’s all free.”
Cardle will be one of many musicals acts who will be performing during the three-month festival.
As always, the fun will begin with the annual Cookson parade in June, with top local talent entertaining crowds at the Amphitheatre in Sea Road, before big-name stars perform at a series of free Sunday concerts in Bents Park throughout August.
