As the ward councillor for Bedlington Central I am absolutely delighted with residents’ responses to the proposed new retail-led town development
Many residents have personally expressed to me their joy at the proposals made in the recently placed planning application. Comments made on the various social media sites have also been extremely positive.
I know through being a member of the former steering group and the delivery group that so much effort has gone into responding to our community’s concerns. For example, from an initial thought of over 60 homes on the site this has been reduced to 12 flats above the retail outlets.
It’s envisaged there will be parking for up to 250 cars, and there is ongoing dialogue with national companies willing to invest in Bedlington.
The expected increase in footfall will help our existing traders, who faced with high rents, a potential increase in business rates and competition from the internet, need as many customers through their doors as possible.
I must congratulate Arch, the developer, for taking on board the various issues that were raised at the consultation events or through its website, www.investinginbedlingtonco.uk
To compliment the new town centre I have been working with Arch, Leading Link, a local sculptor and local schools to design an artwork. I have been able to fully fund this through my members’ small grant scheme, which will fit nicely in the new development.
My hope now is to be re-elected in the May elections to see all this delivered and to continue bringing investment into Bedlington.
