EUROPE: Rights pre-date the EU

editorial image

I would like to take issue with a number of statements made by Jonathon Proctor about the EU referendum, (News Post Leader, May 26).

The Holiday with Pay Act was first introduced in 1938. Maternity Allowance was originally for 13 weeks in 1948, then increased to 18 weeks in 1953. The original Clean Air Act was introduced in 1956, following the great smog of London in 1953. It was updated in 1968.

These acts were introduced long before the EU.

It should be noted that it was an EU directive for protection of some wildlife that exacerbated the flooding in the Somerset Levels in 2013/2014.

This letter was typical of the statements made by the Remain camp and makes no mention of our shipbuilding and steel industries, which were sacrificed on the high altar of Europe.
