REFUGEES: Show some humanity

A reader was commenting on the fact that Northumberland County Council was taking on 12 Syrian refugee families, (News Post Leader, May 26).

They stated that they are a professional worker (teacher) and felt begrudged by the fact that the council was providing a safe haven for families who have lost everything due to a war that, some believe, was facilitated by our own government’s foreign policy.

We should all do our bit to help these pour souls who have lost everything through no fault of their own and consider that if the same fate were to befall us, we’d need similar support from our neighbouring countries.

Our country supports those in need, both internally and externally. We are a rich country and all enjoy the luxuries living in such a country brings to us, so to offer a little bit back to those in need is the least we can do.

It is, after all, why we fought in wars – to be able to treat people with humanity.
