My husband and I recently visited Albert in France to try to locate my grandfather, William Bruce, on the Thiepval Memorial. We found it.
We met a wonderful couple who have been researching the Battle of the Somme for many years.
They mentioned that they were researching a Bedlington man and asked for our help in tracing any descendants.
His name was James Bonner Archibald and, like my grandfather, he died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, July 1, 1916.
He signed up in September 1914, and the residence given was his sister Alice’s house, 34 Victoria Terrace, Bedlington.
There is no record of any children, but Alice was married to William Dodd and had two sons, James Miller Dodd, born 1907, and Frederick Dodd, born 1909.
James Bonner Archibald was a very interesting, colourful man.
Any information on any remaining family would be great. Photos would be amazing.
