A DEDICATED arts space for young people is set to be developed in Newbiggin.

This follows the award of a £10,000 grant as part of the Mary Portas town team project.

The money from the Arts Council will fund a programme of activities based in the Youth Arts Hub – which will take over one of the pop-up shop spaces in the high street.

A special youth arts festival will be held in the maritime centre on Sunday, between 2pm and 5.30pm, and will act as a consultation event to garnish ideas from young people.

The pilot is being delivered by the town team, which includes Newbiggin Maritime Centre, Newbiggin Forward, Newbiggin Town Council and Northumberland County Council.

Newbiggin Maritime Centre manager Crystal Hinds said: “The past few months have had their challenges but we are beginning to see the fruits of our labour in the wonderful projects which are starting to unfold.

“The Arts Council funding is so welcome as it will really allow us to engage young people in the area in fun and meaningful activity and give them a sense of ownership over their high-street and town.”

Sunday’s event will feature a live hip hop performance from urban street dancing theatre group Bad Taste Cru, along with a young people’s showcase, discussions and a buffet.

Young people and youth leaders are welcome to drop in on the day, or call (01670) 622210 or e-mail
