IT was a close affair – but in the end, Ashington CC lost their opening game of the season in the Northumberland & Tyneside Senior League against Annfield Plain at Langwell Crescent on Saturday.
Batting first, the Colliers lost wickets at regular intervals before stuttering to an all out score of 101 in only 29.1 overs.
Andrew Gray at number four top scored with 27 and was looking in good form until he was caught behind by Carr off Harrison.
Similarly Scott Thornton and Daniel Grant then later Matty Storey all reached double figures before losing their wickets with former Durham first class bowler Neil Killeen helping himself to 4-37 from 11.1 overs.
However, Stephen Boyd, on his return to the Ashington side, made sure that the visitors did not get things there own way as he ripped through the top order with figures of 4-8 inside eight overs.
He trapped opener Shield and Killeen leg before whilst also clean bowling Stephenson and Carr.
Allen was the mainstay for the Plain with 36 but when Graham Whitworth and Craig Wood chipped in with a couple of wickets each, the visitors were in a real sweat still requiring 18 runs to win.
However Khan’s unbeaten 18 coupled with seven from Newstead saw them home.
