ASHINGTON seconds reached the final of the Wellstream Northumberland and Tyneside Senior League ‘B’ division cup last week after a thrilling victory over Sacriston in the gathering gloom at Langwell Crescent.
Set a target of 100 to win, the Colliers lost Scott Dunn to a run out but they were well served by Matty Storey (23) and Steve Williams (21).
However with skipper Martin Thewlis and Dale Ross at the crease, Ashington required a run a ball from the last six and a half overs.
That was whittled down to 20 needed from 18 balls with the pair seeing their side home with four balls to spare.
Thewlis, who included one massive six, ended unbeaten on 27 and Ross on 11.
Earlier Craig Robertson had top scored for the visitors with 32 whilst Liam McSkelly and Callum Appleby both hit 19.
For the hosts, Matty Collins ended with 2-23; James Richards 1-22 and Thewlis 1-26.
Ashington will now face Ponteland or Annfield Plain in the final at Tynedale’s Priors Flat in Hexham on Sunday, September 2.
The following night, Ashington thirds reached the final of the Ian Appleby Cup when they beat Humshaugh with two balls to spare.
Scores: Humshaugh 90-6 off 18 overs (Matty Collins 4-18); Ashington 91-5 off 17.4 overs (Adam Nichol 30; James Lovatt 21).
The Colliers will take on the winners of the Hexham Leazes v Tynemouth clash in the final, which is to be staged at Langwell Crescent.
