Ashington seconds a step closer to league title

Ashington seconds edged a step closer towards the B1 division title after a 41 runs victory over Backworth on Saturday.

Following second placed Tynedale’s defeat by 13 runs at Ponteland, the Langwell Crescent outfit now hold a 34 points lead at the top with five games of the season remaining.

Sixteen-year-old Matty Potts batted well to top score with 42 and Michael Levison scored 34 as the Colliers closed on 151-9 after 45 overs.

In reply, the home side fell short as three bowlers shared nine wickets,

Doug Potts took 3-24, Ian Sharkey 3-27 and Michael Thewlis 3-29.

On Saturday, Ashington seconds are at home to Greenside.
